Kaltura: Edit Captions Ordered Prior to September 3rd, 2019

Penn State faculty, staff, students, and affiliates using Kaltura who want to edit captions ordered prior to September 3rd, 2019.

Introduction

This article demonstrates how to edit Kaltura's machine captions that were ordered with the old captioning system, Cielo, prior to September 3rd, 2019.

Machine captions are captions created by a computer with 70-80% accuracy. They often need editing and review to ensure your captions meet Penn State accessibility requirements and are understandable. Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Navigate to Kaltura's MediaSpace (opens in new window) in your browser and Login.
  2. Click your name in the upper right-hand corner. A drop-down menu opens.
  3. Click My Media in the drop-down menu.

  4. Locate the video to which you want to add captions and click its thumbnail image or title.

  5. Click the ACTIONS drop-down menu, on the right below your video, and click Edit.
  6. Click the Captions tab below the video on the Edit page.
  7. Click the Edit Captions button to the right above the list of caption files. The captions editor launches.

  8. Select the caption file you would like to edit from the list on the Closed Captions Editor page.

  9. Click the caption you wish to edit.

  10. Edit the captions as needed.

  11. Use the time fields, next to the editing field, to adjust the duration in which the captions appear to the viewer in your video.

  12. Click the Save button above the media player, and then click Yes in the prompt that displays.
  13. Click Back in the upper right-hand corner above the media player and refresh the MediaSpace page for your video. 
  14. Click the CC icon at the bottom of the video.
  15. Select the captions file label and click Play to see your captions in action.

    NOTE: It may take up to 3-5 times the length of your video to reflect any changes or edits made to your captions.
