This article addresses the acquisition of GitHub Copilot licenses for Penn State faculty, staff, and students.

It's important to distinguish GitHub Copilot from Microsoft Copilot and Copilot for Microsoft 365, as these are entirely separate products with independent licensing. For more information on these please visit the Penn State IT Office Copilot page.

Successfully activating a GitHub Copilot subscription grants access to the functionality throughout the GitHub.com platform only. This page only covers details on GitHub Copilot.

Subscription plans for GitHub Copilot

While GitHub Copilot offers various subscription tiers, this document focuses solely on the Copilot Individual plan. For a comprehensive overview of all subscription options, please refer to GitHub's Subscription plans for GitHub Copilot page.

Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise subscriptions are unavailable at this time.  Any requests for these products via GitHub will be ignored.

GitHub Copilot for Faculty and Students

GitHub Copilot offers complimentary access for verified students, educators, and maintainers of prominent open-source projects.

Refer to GitHub's Getting free access to Copilot as a student, teacher, or maintainer, for eligibility details and the application process for a free Copilot Individual subscription.

GitHub Copilot for Staff

Penn State staff can leverage a complimentary 30-day trial of GitHub Copilot to evaluate its functionality before committing to a paid subscription. Upon trial expiration, continued access necessitates a paid license.

For detailed information regarding billing and subscription options, please refer to GitHub's About billing for GitHub Copilot Individual page.

Staff interested in acquiring a paid GitHub Copilot license should request approval from their management and, if approved, collaborate with their unit or department's finance team to purchase a license using funds from their respective funding resources.

After purchasing an individual Copilot license, we strongly recommend that you disable the "Allow GitHub to use my data for product improvements" option. This setting can be found in the "Privacy" section of your GitHub account's Copilot settings page. Per GitHub, if this setting is enabled it will "Allow GitHub, its affiliates and third parties to use my data, including Prompts, Suggestions, and Code Snippets, for product improvements."
