Article Intended For

Cisco Jabber softphone users on Laptops or Smart Devices

Introduction

Cisco Jabber is a softphone application that can run on your laptop, smart device, or tablet, allowing you to make and receive calls from your Penn State telephone line and/or act as a call center agent.

Why Cisco Jabber?

  • Be more productive from anywhere on any device with Cisco Jabber.
  • Cisco Jabber is a unified communications application for Windows, Mac and mobile devices (IOS/Android).
  • With Cisco Jabber, faculty and staff can bring their Penn State phone number with them when they are away from their office. Supported Cisco Jabber services include calling, instant messaging, and voicemail.

Licensing and Costs for Cisco Jabber and MyE911

  • Licensing to use Cisco Jabber is already part of the monthly fee that you pay for a University VoIP phone line.  (Voicemail and Voicemail Transcription are also included in the line fee.)
  • Licensing to use RedSky MyE911 is part of the VoIP line service monthly.

Federal legislation requires that softphone applications be able to route emergency calls placed to 911 to the nearest Public Service Answering Point(PSAP) and provide a dispatchable location for emergency response.

Penn State uses MyE911 to help comply with this federal requirement.  MyE911 software is product by RedSky Technologies, a provider of E911 software that works in concert with Cisco Jabber.  Installing and configuring MyE911 is required when using Jabber to provide accurate location information in the event of a 911 call.

Penn State EIT Infrastructure , with the guidance of the Office of General Counsel, will be performing an initial and ongoing audit of Cisco Jabber softphone users and the required MyE911 software installation.  If MyE911 is determined to not be installed, the user's softphone access will be turned off until remediated.

Prerequisites for using MyE911 with Cisco Jabber at Penn State:

  • You currently have a Penn State telephone number provisioned on the enterprise telephony system.
  • Enable your office phone number and PSU Access ID for Cisco Jabber services by submitting a request for 'Cisco Jabber'
