This article is intended for Penn State faculty, staff, and students who teach or manage courses or Prides in Canvas.
Introduction
According to the Penn State Canvas Archive Policy, Canvas courses will remain in long-term storage during years 4 and 5 of the 5-year retention period. Teachers or course admins can request copies of their course content or grades from long-term storage through the Penn State IT Service Desk. Follow the steps below to view a list of your courses in long-term storage and request a copy of your course content.
NOTE: The content that is archived includes course-level data, enrollments, grades, discussions, and quizzes. No external links or plugins will be retained. After 5 years, this content will be permanently removed. Be sure to export and back-up any data you will need after the 5 year timeframe using the 3-2-1 rule.
Step-by-Step Instructions
View and Request Courses in Long-Term Storage
- Log in to Canvas.
- Go to your Dashboard.
- Click the Course Archive Manager button located at the bottom of the right-side menu.
NOTE: If you only see the Pride Manager button, please contact the IT Service Desk at canvas@psu.edu or 814-865-HELP for further assistance.

- Scroll down to the Long-Term Storage list.
- Copy the SisID of the course you want to request.

- Complete the course request form linked above the list of your courses in long-term storage (Figure 2).
- You will receive an email from the IT Service Desk when a copy of your course content is available.
NOTE: Your original course will not be accessible per the direction of the University Registrar.
