How students can license and install MATLAB software

Introduction

This information is for Penn State students who need access to MATLAB software. Students can place a formal request at https://softwarerequest.psu.edu/. This no cost student license can only be installed on a students own personal device and not a Penn State owned device. Faculty and staff can place requests at https://softwarestore.psu.edu/all-products/browse/keyword/matlab.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Obtain the Installer

Please follow the below instructions to obtain your MATLAB license. If you run into trouble you can contact Mathworks directly for support. Their contact information is included at the bottom of this document.

1. Go the URL you received in the order summary from https://softwarerequest.psu.edu/.

2. Click the Sign in to get started button in the middle of the page.

3. Sign in with your Penn State Access Account ID and password.

4. Create a new Mathworks account or sign into an existing one.

5. Complete the Profile Form. You must use your Penn State email (abc123@psu.edu) when creating a Mathworks account.

6. Download MATLAB.

For technical support or trouble-shooting assistance, contact Mathworks technical support directly at www.mathworks.com/support/contact_us or by phone at 508-647-7000. You will need your activation key for support, it was included in the order summary you received from https://softwarerequest.psu.edu/.

Install and Activate

1. Run the installer.

2. In the installer, select Log in with a Mathworks Account and follow the online instructions.

3. When prompted to do so, select the Academic - Total Headcount license labeled Individual. 

4. Select the products you want to download and install.

5. After downloading and installing your products, keep the Activate MATLAB checkbox selected and click Next.

6. Follow the prompts to activate MATLAB.

Instructions for Annual Renewal

-MATLAB student license require annual renewal and you will need to re-activate your existing installation. If you leave the university before then you are NOT eligible to re-activate.

-You will see the below expiration message starting 15 days from the expiration date.

-You can activate the license then or let MATLAB expire. Once it expires and you attempt to launch MATLAB again, it will automatically launch the Activation Client.

-Re-activate can be done within; Help > Licensing > Activate Software.
