Article Intended For
Penn State students, employees who are not eligible for Platform SSO for Mac, and other affiliates who want to use Touch ID to access a passkey stored in Apple Passwords on a personal Mac computer.
Introduction
You can create a passkey for your Penn State Account and save it to Apple Passwords on your Mac. Your passkey is synced through iCloud Keychain and can also be used on other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
That said, if you've already created a passkey on your iPhone or iPad and saved it to the Apple Passwords app, you don't need to create a new passkey. You can simply enable Touch ID on your Mac (if not already enabled) and use it to verify your identity using the same passkey.
Things to know:
- If you already created a passkey for your Penn State Account in Apple Passwords on an iPhone, iPad, or another Mac using the same Apple Account, you do not need to create another passkey. It will already be available on your Mac through iCloud Keychain.
- iCloud Keychain must be enabled on your Mac to save and sync passkeys in Apple Passwords. Please see the following Apple Support article for more information: https://support.apple.com/guide/passwords/passkeys-mchl4af65d1a/mac
- Touch ID does not store your passkey. Your passkey is stored in Apple Passwords. Touch ID verifies your identity before allowing the passkey to be used.
- You do not need an iPhone or iPad to create a passkey using Apple Passwords on your Mac.
