Article Intended For

Penn State students, faculty and staff who wish to use Penn State's GitHub service.

Introduction

GitHub is an industry standard for code collaboration and version control. Its free tier is widely used by individuals to share open-source code and collaborate on projects.

Penn State has purchased a University Unlimited license, which provides us with a GitHub Enterprise Cloud license. Please see our FAQ for more information on what this license provides.

To gain individual access to Penn State's GitHub service, please take the steps described below.

Once that is done, you will be invited to the 'psu-edu' GitHub organization, which provides access to the core Penn State GitHub services. The GitHub invite email will come from noreply@github.com with a subject similar to "[GitHub] @psugithubadmin has invited you to join the @psu-edu organization".

Please wait 24 hours before accepting the invitation so that your account is fully provisioned to use the service.

Please see github.psu.edu for more information, including a list of existing GitHub Organizations that are part of the Penn State Github service (GitHub's Enterprise Cloud subscription).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Log into the "Penn State" portion of softwarerequest.psu.edu. (Our GitHub license does not apply to Penn College.)
  • Search for GitHub. (it is not case-sensitive)
  • Click the green Order button below the GitHub icon.

  • The Confirm Order GitHub Enterprise screen will be displayed next.
  • Read all of the required policies and check the boxes if you agree. Note that you will be granted access to Penn State's GitHub service (GitHub Enterprise Cloud) only if you agree to and check all of the boxes!
  • Click the green Order button.

  • You should see an "Order Success" screen like this:

  • You should receive an email from Penn State Software <noreply@psu.edu> welcoming you to the Penn State GitHub service and providing some information on logging in and getting help.
  • All Penn State GitHub users are automatically invited to the Penn State University Organization (https://github.com/psu-edu). This Organization provides GitHub's core features with no extra-cost add-ons. Its purpose is to provide a GitHub home for users who do not need those features and are not in a unit with an existing Organization. We use GitHub Teams to organize users there.
  • Reminder: Please wait 24 hours before accepting the invitation so that your account is fully provisioned to use the service.
    • The GitHub invite email will come from noreply@github.com with a subject similar to "[GitHub] @psugithubadmin has invited you to join the @psu-edu organization".
