Issue

A student living in a residence hall wants to use a personal router in their room.

Environment

  • Roomgear network
  • PSU network
  • Residence Hall

Resolution

University Park Residence Halls and Undergraduate Apartments

Wireless routers or hotspots of any kind are not allowed within the residence halls. Personal wireless routers cannot be used in residence halls because they interfere with Penn State’s wireless network.

University Networking Polices

University networking policies do not allow sharing your wired or wireless network with anyone, including friends, family, and roommates. Using your computer as a hotspot connection to the Housing network is also not allowed. While a wireless router can be convenient, it also creates security concerns and interference to anything within 500 feet of that router.
