Introduction

This article explains what to do when you get a new phone to replace a phone that's currently enrolled for use with multifactor authentication.

Note: This article pertains to individuals who have previously enrolled a phone number. If you need to enroll a phone number please follow the steps in MFA: Add (Enroll) a Phone Number

New phone has same number

Both phones are smartphones
  1. Don't need to enroll new phone.
  2. No additional action required to use phone call or SMS text methods of authentication with your new phone.
  3. To use the Microsoft authenticator app install and reactivate your Microsoft authenticator app.
Both phones are non-smartphones 
  1. Don't need to enroll new phone.
  2. No additional action required to use phone call or SMS text methods of authentication.
One phone is a smartphone, the other is not
  1. You must first unenroll the old phone; then enroll the new one.
  2. If you have access to another enrolled device you may enroll your new phone yourself.  
  3. If don't have access to an enrolled device other than your old phone, call the IT Service Desk for assistance.

New phone has a different number

  1. You must unenroll the old phone and enroll the new one.
