When a user is required to enroll in MFA without a Smartphone, where the Microsoft Authenticator app is not an available authentication option.

Environment

  • MFA
  • Cell phone
  • Office phone

Resolution

A smartphone is not required to use Microsoft Multifactor Authentication. By adding a cell phone, office phone, or home phone you can authenticate with a phone call. Cell phones that can receive text message will also have the option to authenticate by text code.

Enroll in MFA without a smartphone (No App Required)

  1. Navigate to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info
  2. Select +Add sign-in method
  3. Which method would you like to add?
  4. Select Phone from the dropdown menu
    1. If you already have a phone enrolled select Alternative Phone to add a second phone
  5. Add phone number you would like to authenticate with and press Next
  6. The system will call your phone
  7. Answer the phone call and press the # key
  8. You successfully enrolled your phone
