Article Intended For

Penn State faculty, staff, students, and affiliates who use the GlobalProtect Virtual Private Network (VPN) to connect to secured Penn State resources. This article is intended to define how the VPN's Host Information Profile(HIP Notifications have been implemented and will be used in the Penn State network.

Introduction

The GlobalProtect VPN agent will present users with a Host Information Profile(HIP) notification when specific conditions of their computer are met that may influence the operating state of the VPN agent.

HIP Notification Types

There are two types of HIP notifications:  Warnings and Enforcements.

 

 

 

 

HIP Notifications that present the GP user information without currently impacting their GP VPN state is a warning type and will show an amber banner at the top of the notification.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

HIP Notifications that present the GP user information and is currently impacting their GP VPN state is an enforcement type and will show a red banner at the top of the notification.

 

 

 

 

 

 

HIP Notification Fields

Each HIP Notification pop-up message consists of five fields:

  • Colorized Banner:
    • Amber represents a warning and no impact to user traffic, while Red represents an enforcement that is blocking user traffic until the notified issue is resolved.
    • HIP notification category.  Category may be related to Operating System, A/V status, or GlobalProtect Agent status.
  • Notification Reason: 1-2 sentences that describes why the HIP notification is being presented to the user.
  • Action: What action has been taken while the host is in the current state.
  • Resolution:  How the user can self-resolve the issue, should include links to supporting KB articles if available.
  • Support Details:  Provide additional information and contacts for support by local IT and PSU Support Desk

These HIP Notifications have not yet been implemented, but are planned during a future feature release of the GlobalProtect VPN service.
