Article Intended For
This article is intended for Penn State faculty and staff who teach or manage courses in Canvas.
Introduction
The grade posting policy sets how grades and comments are released to students. This feature replaced previously known mute and unmute assignments as well as introduced some visual changes to these icons.
Article Body
With the grade posting policy feature, assignment grades may be manually or automatically posted.
Manually posted grades allows an instructor to hide all grades and comments until the instructor chooses to post the grades. This is the new name for a muted assignment.
Automatically posted grades for an assignment is the equivalent of an unmuted assignment where grades and comments are immediately posted.
In the gradebook, the word MANUAL now displays in the assignment header to indicate the assignment is set with the Manual Posting Policy.
Assignments set with the Automatic Posting Policy do not include any additional indicator aside from the point value.
Figure 1: The word MANUAL will display in the assignment header indicating the assignment is set with a Manual Posting Policy.
When an instructor enters a grade for a manually posted assignment, the Eye icon indicates that grades have been entered into the gradebook and need to be posted.
Grades can also be hidden or re-hidden at any time, regardless of the policy selected. The assignment menu Hide Grades option displays for any assignment where grades are visible to students.
Important Note: Selecting a manual posting policy will not apply retroactively to grades that have already been entered. Any grades that have already posted will remain visible. To hide grades for an assignment that have already been graded, you can hide grades from the assignment's Options menu.
Grades can be re-posted at any time using the assignment menu.
